Experience Details
Satoyama is the Japanese word for a tranquil rural lifestyle near mountains, rivers, and fields. In this experience, you'll feel the spirit of satoyama in Gifu, a charming countryside destination home to the ever-popular Shirakawa-go village that looks straight out of a fairytale. In this experience, you'll explore lesser-known hamlets untouched by time, stroll and cycle along farmhouses and forests, and taste regional foods and specialty brews! Your local guide will facilitate communication with the villagers and share fascinating insights about the area's folk culture. Experience flow: -Meet your host at the entrance gate of Takayama Jinya, a 10-min. walk from Takayama Station. A major historical landmark in the village, Takayama Jinya is a painstakingly preserved government building. -Explore the thatched-roof town of Takayama on foot. Stroll along the old merchant wooden houses, rice fields, and historical streets guided by a knowledgeable host. -Enjoy a local sake tasting and lunch at a traditional restaurant. -Go to the neighboring town of Hida Furukawa and take a cycling tour of the area. Explore mountainous roads between forests, see traditional farmhouses, and experience rural country life in this lesser-known area. While you can expect considerable walking and cycling, both experienced cyclists and children can comfortably keep pace in this fun, enriching experience. This activity is great for families, couples, or friends looking to experience Satoyama country living in Japan!
